Self-Care vs. Self-Love: What's the difference?

Hey angels!

So if you follow me on social media (which by the way you so should because that's where all the action happens) then you will know I am incredibly passionate about two things, self-love and self-care.

What is self-care?

I used to think of self-care as bubble baths and face masks and would force myself to 'pamper myself' because that's what self-care is right?

Self-care doesn't have to be luxurious or fancy. It doesn't even need to cost you a penny! Whilst spa treatments and painting your nails are, of course, both valid forms of self-care, it doesn't always need to be this glamorous. I want you to shift your mindset and think of self-care as self-preservation.

Self-care is absolutely, 100% necessary for the modern day women. We are all so busy all the time, running from here to there, raising a family, building an empire, meeting deadlines and somewhere in between all that remembering to shower. It's never ending and we never seem to just stop, take a breath and look after ourselves.

As women it is very much in our nature that we want to help others. However, this often manifests at putting others first at the expense of our own wellness. Not cool. I'll tell you what else isn't cool...this weird stigma that looking after ourselves is in someway selfish.

I know, it's crazy but sadly this is genuinely what so many women think. They think that if they take time out for themselves to refill their cup then they are being a bad Mum, friend, boss, wife, sister employee etc. But let me tell you a secret, the opposite is actually true. You will be a better Mum, friend, boss, wife, sister, employee etc. when you start putting yourself first. Here's why...

You have to continually fill your cup as part of a daily practice (yes, that means you need to be practicing self-care everyday) before you can fill anyone else's cup. Wanna know why? BECAUSE YOU CAN'T POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP BABE! Sorry for shouting but this is something I had to learn the hard way, so I am extremely passionate about helping you avoid my mistakes.

When we take time everyday to refill our cups we feel happier, more energised and all round just more positive. As a result this means you can show up more lovingly for those around you.

It's all well and good me telling you that you need to take time out for yourself everyday but I can still sense some of you making excuses.

'I don't have time'.

'I can't afford it'.

'It feels selfish'.

Seriously, stop with the bullshit excuses.

By spouting these excuses what you are really saying is, you're not important. You're not worthy of your own time. You're not deserving of the energy you give to others. You're not allowed to feel loved. You don't matter.

And let me tell you right now;

You are important.

You are worthy of your own time.

You are deserving of the energy you give to others.

You are allowed to feel loved.

You do matter.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION! Give yourself permission to fill your cup, feed your soul and recharge your energy. You spend your whole life running round after everyone else no doubt, but now it's time to think about you and renourish yourself. All I want is for you to realise you deserve this time as much as anyone else on this planet. 15 minutes a day. That's all you need. And if you're still sat there thinking, 'I don't have time for 15 minutes a day for myself'...then you're in real trouble.

What is self-love?

It's taken me a little while to realise and fully appreciate this but I have come to learn that self-care is self-love.

Being kind to ourselves on days where we're feeling anxious is self-love.

Slowing down at times where we're feeling overwhelmed and stressed is self-love.

Giving yourself permission to enjoy 'me time' is self-love.

Looking after ourselves, physically, emotionally and soulfully is showing our body, mind and spirit self-love!

Self-care truly is the ultimate act of self-love and we could all use some more self-love in our lives!

So if you want to start showing yourself more self-love, then practicing self-care is the perfect place to start. If you want to learn more about self-love and self-care then check out my eBook: The Self-Love & Self-Care Manual: A Guide To Loving Yourself.

Remember, self-care and self-love is not selfish, it is self-full.
