So you've probably seen this delicious yellow drink on my snapchat a few times recently and since I've had messages from a lot of you asking for the recipe I thought I would share! After doing a lot of research on Turmeric Latte's (or 'golden milk' as it's also called) I found that most of the recipes had a list of ingredients as long as my arm! And as I always like to keep it real with you girls, let's be honest, ain't nobody got time for that! So I created my own recipe that tastes amazing, has only a few ingredients that won't cost you a bomb and is just as good for you! First I want to tell you about some of the amazing health benefits of turmeric and why I first tried golden milk.
Why Drink Golden Milk?
Aside from the fact that it's absolutely delicious, turmeric has many health benefits and is so good for you whether consumed in this drink, curries, soups, sauces or other cooking. It's bright in colour and often used in Indian cuisine and gives food that vibrant yellow/orange colour (so don't spill on your cream carpet, it will stain....trust me). Turmeric supports digestion, the immune system, the liver, has anti-inflammatory properties and even possibly offers protection from some types of cancer. It is the curcumin in turmeric that gives the ancient spice its antioxidant properties and may also improve digestion of fats and sugars and help alleviate inflammation in the digestive system. So in my opinion, a real super food!
Why I Drink Golden Milk!
I love hot drinks. Like, seriously, a cup of tea fixes everything (yes, I'm, English can you tell?) So when I came across this delicious warming drink AND it was amazing for my health, well winner winner chicken dinner really! I first came across it when I was suffering with what I thought was an awful migraine (for 4 days solid, not cool). I can usually sleep them off but this just went on and on and on and it was hideous with very similar symptoms to a migraine, throbbing head, felt nauseous, and bright light and any noise was the devil. But it also came with horrendous pain in my neck and upper back, so by the end of day 2 I realised it probably wasn't a migraine and in actual fact a really severe tension headache (which I later discovered was caused by my neck being out of place). So I started researching what else I could do to try and help ease the pain whilst waiting for a chiropractor appointment other than foam rolling, pain killers, lots of water and rest. That's when I came across the magic of turmeric latte's and their anti-inflammatory properties. I thought it would be perfect to try for my tension headache and if it didn't work for that well it would probably ease my body in general and help me relax. It definitely helped a little (more so with my already existing lower back pain/sciatica) but unfortunately it just wasn't quite fixing it. After visiting the chiropractor it was made aware to me that my neck was out of alignment (we had just got back from honeymoon which meant awkward positions sleeping on the plane and in the car on the way home) and no amount of turmeric could solve that! Okay, so I was probably being a little optimistic/naive but to be fair I didn't realise my spine was out of alignment at that point, no wonder my head was banging! However, I have continued to drink my turmeric latte's as I know they do the world of good for my body as well as helping me relax in the evening and promoting a good nights sleep (I'm a useless sleeper, always have been, so if you can relate then I would definitely recommend giving this recipe a go before bed).
1 Mug (whichever mug you will serve in) of semi-skimmed milk
1 tsp Turmeric
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1tsp Organic Pure Maple Syrup
Optional: Small Piece of Fresh Ginger, peeled (can help reduce muscle soreness, nausea, is anti-inflammatory and can support the immune system, another super food in my opinion!)
For a frothy texture I put all the ingredients, except the ginger, into a blender and whizz up until it's a beautiful yellow/orange colour. Pour the mixture into a pan and place over a low-medium heat. If using, add your chunk of fresh ginger and heat until warm but do not boil. Keep stirring for 5 minutes or until warmed through. Remove the chunk of ginger, pour into your mug and sprinkle with cinnamon to finish (optional).
You can also make this drink vegan by using water or a milk alternative of your choice (almond, cashew, rice etc.) However, if you use water then you should consider adding a small amount of some sort of fat (coconut oil or butter) as it increases the absorption of all the goodness of the other ingredients. I would recommend only using a teaspoon of fat if you choose to use water, although it won't be as creamy as if you use a milk.
If you are worried to try this recipe as you don't like the flavour of ginger or don't like the idea of the taste of turmeric then don't be scared! Definitely give it a go because you honestly can't particularly taste either of those flavours - I would compare it to a chai latte kind of taste, just way better for you! Sorry to say the C word in October but I have definitely found my new Christmas drink!
