'Bikini Body' Definition

In todays society we seem to hear this phrase a lot. But what does it actually mean? What actually is a 'bikini body'?

Well, unfortunately (or not) there is no official dictionary definition so I'm going to tell you what I think it is..

Bikini Body

[bih-kee-nee] [bod-ee]

1. Feeling confident enough in your own skin to wear a bikini (or any type of swimsuit you like!)

Contrary to popular belief I believe a 'bikini body' has nothing to do with how you look but everything to do with how you feel.

I know this is probably a difficult concept to come to terms with for most of us because of images the media has drilled into our heads about how 'we should look'. We have been conditioned to think that we should only reveal our bodies if they are chiselled, tanned and 'toned'. However, I disagree with this, massively. As you probably already know if you've followed me for a while, here at GLJ Fitness we are all about health over aesthetics.

Like I said, I personally think a 'bikini body' is more to do with how you think and feel about yourself rather than how you look. When embarking on a health and fitness journey it really is a rollercoaster of emotions with how you feel about yourself and your body and day in and day out, it's hard. We question ourselves...why am I doing this? Is my body changing? Shall I just quit? Is it even worth it? But let me tell you, it is always worth it for the ultimate goal, your health. Now, when I talk about health I am never referring to just the physical aesthetics of your body because you are so much more than just some bones and muscle. You are a person and you deserve to be treated like a person by everyone, including yourself. These days we are so quick to engage in negative self-talk and put ourselves down and I think the media has a lot to answer for when it comes to women and how we value ourselves. Women are often over sexualised and portrayed as objects to the point where, as an audience/consumer, we become disconnected with them as humans and see them more as things or brands. Not only does this have a negative effect on our own self worth but it also triggers body shaming of all types. We need to get to the root cause of this. We need to separate ourselves from the judgment of others and the brainwashing of the media. It's an overwhelming thought really but my mission is to help women, one by one, to learn to love themselves again. So I'll start there. Keep an eye out for my upcoming 'Self-Love' blog if you want to read about this topic more in depth.

Moral of the story...if you feel confident and beautiful in a bikini then bloody well wear one I say and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise! Some people focus on getting abs or increasing the size of their biceps or growing a booty (which is all totally fine) but the ultimate goal should always be your heath.

Put your body in a bikini and BAM you have a bikini body.
